Remembering Your Genius. The Artist In You.

by Bindu Wiles on February 8, 2011

Remember when you colored every day?

Remember when you spent all day building forts out of blankets and over turned chairs?

Remember when you wore a princess dress and carried a wand?

Remember when you ran outside for hours playing?

Remember when you wore your grandfathers army canteen to school?

Remember when you moved the furniture so you could twirl and spin until you fell down laughing?

Remember when you made elaborate structures out of sand?

Remember the magic of frosting your first cupcakes, of making cookies for the first time?

Remember making up your own knock-knock jokes?

Remember being adamant about choosing your own clothes for school?

Remember when you though it was a good idea to give yourself a haircut?

Remember when the world was wide open and you were un-self-conscious and being an artist was as natural as breathing?

Watch this video, especially at 1:36, and let it remind you: don’t hold back from expressing who you really are.

Feel free to leave your own Remember when’s in the comments.

Enjoy. Free yourself. Make things.

That kid is so freakin’ adorable. Just when I thought waking up to pictures of kittens was the cutest — this kid takes the cute cake. And wow — looks like he’s channeling a great maestro. Seriously.

Thanks, Bindu!

Wonderful Bindu. Simply Wonder-filled.

Tor February 8, 2011 at 7:26 am

Ha! I don’t do kids, but that’s brilliant. I couldn’t stop watching it, even though my natural instinct was to turn it off! Shit, does that mean I do actually have a teeny tiny maternal bone in my body?!

Lu February 8, 2011 at 7:46 am

My goodness. I needed to see this today. Love it.

carol February 8, 2011 at 7:50 am

Remember being first mesmerized by nature. An intense lightening storm, the first snowfall, ocean waves lapping at the shore and a gentle rain shower, ahhhh.

Yuki February 8, 2011 at 8:15 am

Oh my god, I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen, the display of sheer passion of this little boy (that he doesn’t even realize yet!). Want to share this with the world! Thank you, Bindu.

Andrea Maurer February 8, 2011 at 8:23 am

Love, love, love this! The video is priceless.

I remember pretending to be a news reporter. I carried a cassette recorder around with me everywhere and interviewed everyone that would let me. I was with “Channel Two News”. Funny really, considering how anti-media I am these days. My interviews weren’t a function of wanting to be a journalist though. They were a function of wanting to hear peoples’ stories. I still want that. Thanks for helping me to remember it.

A conductor tulku!! I was laughing and crying before the 2 minute mark, since I can’t remember when I felt so uninhibited. I can, however, remember when I felt completely transported and blissfully immersed in the joy of just being in/with music. The sight of his laughter when he dropped the wand (?-I’m not really sure what you call it) will inspire me for days to come! Thanks so much for sharing this.

Deb February 8, 2011 at 8:43 am

Bindu, thank you. Tell us about the kid. Please. Please. Please.

Hannah Marcotti February 8, 2011 at 9:42 am

The ending actually got me teary eyed. JOY baby.

Remember when you were eight and your friends started arguing you would bring out an ice cube for everyone to give their mouths something else to do?

I remember the first time I saw the sea and I was utterly SHOCKED. I saw it in an overcast day and it had none of that wonderful blue-ness that I now associate with the sea, but it stayed with me as the Greatest Thing Ever. And, of course, I remember when I used to make little play houses and little play beds with the wooden trays that came with the two rectangular blocks of Philadelphia cheese, before we moved on to these ghastly plastic tubs. The wooden trays where so much better…

This is the most adorable video I have EVER seen. Thank you for sharing it!
Remember your first extra large box of crayons with the sharpener in the back! And when you learned how to mix colors that the possibilities of color were now endless!
How nice to think of all those creative memories. Thank you thank you Bindu

I remember when my brush was the mic, the coffee table was my stage, and my Donny & Marie jammies were my gown. Stardom in the livin’ room.

I remember when my hair brush was my microphone, and if I couldn’t find it, I used a coat hanger instead. I remember when my bedroom was a hotel room and I tidied it and made it beautiful for my guests (brother and sister) who rang me on our pretend phones to make a reservation. I remember my cubby house in the bushes, and selling plums on the side of the road with my friend next door, and fetching clothes pegs from the bottom of our swimming pool. I remember bike races and playing hide-and-seek out on our street and being called inside for dinner.

Thank you for evoking those memories Bindu, on the eve of making plans to move interstate – back home, to where it all began.

Big love xx

I think I hold my childhood dreams close to me, but they are buried deep. When I can get back to my ‘state of play’ I am good. I am never better then when I uncover what I came here with. So the work is all about letting go of this crap that I’ve put on over the years. Just keep taking it all off. xo

Jenny Alexander February 8, 2011 at 7:15 pm

It is so magical and soul stirring to watch someone follow their passion and do what ignites them. A huge thank you for sharing this inspiring young man with us!

Carole Jane Treggett February 8, 2011 at 7:16 pm

Wow, Bindu, I think this is about the second or third time I post something that’s pretty much along the same train of thought as you!

Happened to see one of your many admirers rave about this post on Twitter and came to check and I’m still shaking my head lol.

I’m currently doing some inner-child work again so this subject is near and dear to my heart at the moment. We really all need to be free :)

Nadia February 8, 2011 at 7:56 pm

Remember when you were free?
Remember when you roamed outside with no concept of time until your belly began to rumble?
Remember the taste of soap?
Remember swiss rolls, pizza pockets, ring pops?
Remember having no preconceived judgements of class, sexuality, self-image?
Remember jumping on the trampoline until you simply collapsed?
Remember Zack Morris?
Remember how all you needed was your dog (or fav pet)?
Remember dressing him up?
Remember pac-man and robo-cop?
Remember your endless experiments (the pen that turns water blue!)?
Remember the twilight of a tee ball game?
Remember your best friend? Your first crush?
Remember how important it was to have a favorite (color, number, basketball team)?
Remember having the whole world within your reach?
Remember knowing you could be a doctor, veternarian, astronaut, marine biologist, etc in just one lifetime?

Remember when you believed in yourself?

Remember when starting over was as simple as waking up the next day?

Elinor February 8, 2011 at 8:57 pm

This is great! The movements are fantastic and expressions so intense. What a sweet maestro!

Mary Hicks February 8, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Remember playing with a potato bug for like…hours?
Remember chasing butterflies?
Remember climbing the apple tree?
Remember chasing bunnies?
Remember collecting leaves?

This post of yours today was good medicine for me…and that video! OMG, how adorable it that? Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I’d like to think we were all as uninhibited at that age as this joyous and talented boy… but it isn’t true. That he was exposed to this music by his family so often he learned it’s entire cadence, is a testimony to a wonderful parent or parents and extended family. I give kudos to them. For some of us fight to be ourselves. To find our passion, or give up too soon. I, myself, have an outer child and I honor her everyday, though occasionally I do feel the inner crotchety old lady coming to the forefront… My grandson helps me drive her away! This is the second time I see this. And I’m still amazed at his knowledge of this piece of music! Bravo maestro! I believe you have discovered your passion at a very tender age!

I remember when the whole world of possibilities was mine, and the future held the infinite promise of the universe. I remember hating bedtime while I could still hear the grownups kept playing. I remember the great love I had for my floppy teddybear as we hugged in bed. I remember when the whole of the universe centered around me and that was ok!

Pure genius Bindu. Thank you for the remembrance and the release…

Rosemary February 9, 2011 at 9:10 am

Hi Bindu, This is my first time visiting your blog…and I’ve subscribed so I’ll definitely be back. This child is so, so hilarious. And yes, I can remember the creativity of childhood. Once my friend and I, both aged 6, went missing on a Saturday after dancing lessons at noon. Our parents were frantic when we hadn’t turned up by 6pm, and we were eventually tracked down to the very bottom corner of a hilly field full of cowslips. We had gotten involved in some game or another and simply forgot to go home. Even hunger didn’t intrude which is the same thing that happens to me as the hands of the clock whizz around while I’m writing. Thanks for sharing this…that child is definitely a genius. His timing was perfect and his reactions to the varying tones of urgency or calm was unbelievable. :)

Jerry Firman February 9, 2011 at 12:06 pm

I find myself still doing all of the things you mention even though I am nearing 75. The little boy was precious. I am going to put some classical on the player and see if I can do as well. Thank you for this very pleasant experience.

Oh my god! The end is the best part! I love that he just cracks up!

This triggered a major “remember when” for me: My dad is a piano tuner, and when I was little, I used to take lessons. I would sit my sister (two years younger) on the bench beside me and tell her to pick a song for me to play from a songbook. Then I would pretend to play it (I couldn’t read music). I had a good ear, though, and when I was five, I was offered a full scholarship at a prestigious music school near my home–but my parents were on the verge of a malicious, lengthy divorce, and they couldn’t agree on who would continue to drive me to lessons when they separated. I quit attending, and never touched a piano again.
