The Shed Project

by Bindu Wiles on August 30, 2010

This is The Shed Project, and you’re invited.

On September 14, I’m starting an 8 week adventure in letting go.

A Shedventure!

I will be letting go of all but 100 of my possessions, and 10 lbs off my body.

And I’d love you to join me…

…because when you travel light you have more freedom and flexibility. You can explore different paths and different choices.

…because when you let go of excess baggage you create beautiful, clear space. Space to breathe. Space to see your world and life afresh. Space for new energy and new ideas to flood in.

But letting go is rarely easy. Which is why we’re going to do this together.

The Shed Project is about coming together as an online community, to support each other in letting go of the excess baggage. To support you in letting go of whatever is weighing you down.

What’s weighing you down?

Stuff.

The stuff we accumulate in an attempt to feel safe, secure, happy, successful, and generally OK.
The stuff we use to fill every bit of space in our lives, so we don’t have to think or feel too much.
The stuff we consume to feed the vague yearning for more, so we can feel a little less empty for a while.

How’s that working for you?

Stuff is a tricky beast. You get more of it and then you need more space to store it, and then you need more money to maintain it. It’s an endless cycle that rarely satisfies your underlying need for love, safety and fulfillment.

Is the stuff helping you feel better, or you still feeling hungry, fearful and empty?

It’s time to Shed It

Yeah, I know it’s scary, but we’re going to be right here with you. With the support of The Shed Project online community, we’ll do things we never thought possible before.

And you’re going choose whatever it is you need to let go on this journey.

Letting go of possessions is big. Who doesn’t have too much stuff in their home?

I’m letting go of all but 100 of my possessions.

You might want to let go of 1/3 of your possessions. Or empty that storage space that’s costing you money. Or finally sort through those boxes of keepsakes you haven’t looked at for 10 years.

You can let go of excess weight. I’m letting go of 10 lbs. You could let go of 1 lb (about 1/2 kg) per week for the 8 weeks. Or get rid of that comfort food that feels good in the moment and so horrible a couple of hours later. Or relinquish that other habit you’re using to numb out: smoking, drinking, or excessive TV / internet.

And, of course, we’ll be letting go of emotional baggage.

The awesome truth is this: whatever you choose, once you you start letting go, you will GAIN. You will gain unexpected and wonderful things that simply didn’t have the space to show up before.

So, what have you got to lose?

Join the Shedventure

As a member of The Shed Project, you’ll be part of an online community of people supporting each other in this 8 week adventure of letting go.

This is what you get as a Shedventure member:

**  You will have, available 24/7 through my website, The Shed Project Resource Kit. Inspiration and guidance. Books and websites.

**  You will have the support of our online community through a Flickr forum. We’ll share before and after photos, discuss the process and cheer each other on.

** You will be able to connect with other members of the online community and share blogging about their Shedventure, and links to your own Shedventure blog posts. (I’ll also be posting my own journey to 100 possessions, and to be 10 lbs lighter.)

** Access to video interviews with me.

** Live Ustream TV Q & A sessions with me.

I’ve gathered many guest writers who will be posting during the 8 weeks of the project about their own adventures in letting go.

These are people who have gone before us – losing weight, letting go of possessions, packing up, downsizing and lightening their load. Gathered from all over the globe, they will inspire you with their stories, ideas and flat-out bravery.

That’s what I know will be in The Shed Project right now, and I think it’s pretty exciting. But honestly, I’m even more excited to see what emerges over the 8 week journey.

When you get a bunch of vibrant, creative people together, truly amazing things will happen.
I know it’s going to be a thrilling and liberating ride!

I can’t wait. And I hope you’ll be there with me.

The Shed Project begins September 14.

General membership registration opens September 7th—just $44 for the whole eight weeks.

Subscribers to my blog posts by email will recieve a special discount of 20% off The Shed Project member price ($35.20), so become a subscriber today and receive the private pre-launch price.

I have made this VERY affordable for everyone. Please help spread the word!

um…if you’re letting go of your Ray Bans…I could put them to good use.
Just sayin’.

What a great project!

Since I’m moving to a new country the day before you kick off, I believe I’m naturally a part of this already due to luggage restictions… So I’ll use this as an opportunity to form healthy habits in my new home and shed the desire to accumulate new things and fill up my new space. And I’d like to give up some weight too.

I just shed 250 pounds worth of stuff at the beginning of this summer, all of which went to the salvation army, and I’m preparing to let go of even more next week. It’s so liberating!

Brilliant! Would mos def join in/sign on but completed this for myself last August when I moved from Atlanta, GA to Melbourne, Australia. Has been interesting. Sometimes I reach for/look for something only to remember that I gave it away. Sometimes I get scared a la buying into the “scarcity model of the universe” but mostly, I feel very agile and free…I wish you the utmost enjoyment with your process!

Intrigued. I love a good shedding. Keep me posted. In the meantime, I will be over here in the back of this closet, making room for the good that’s coming toward me now.

I would like to shed my job… yikes! (I’ve also left NYC recently – possibly forever)… I realize that hanging on to this job is holding me back from all the things I’m creating….

Trish September 3, 2010 at 3:04 pm

I’m in! I have WAAAAAAAY too much stuff. I look forward to this “shedventure.” WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!

Duff September 3, 2010 at 5:06 pm

Letting go of excess stuff and excess weight is a great thing. I often compare the storage unit industry in particularly to other gray market businesses like casinos and bars, helping people to maintain their addictions at great cost.

I find it curious however that nobody includes a thorough review of their digital life when they do so however. Is having 1000 pdf/kindle/ebooks necessarily less cluttered than 1000 well-organized shelved books? If one wants to include digital management in this shedding, I recommend a little book entitled Bit Literacy by Mark Hurst, which includes principles and instructions for getting your email inbox to zero every day, organizing files intelligently, etc.

It’s also worth having some discussion about whether physical things are the problem, or if the problem is more lack of clarity.

Just spent lots on a Brooks Palmer (highly recommended) and lost 5 pounds not doing anything differently. It works! Gave so many books to the library, so many clothes to shelter, school supplies and toys to kids.
Just looking at what the space cleared brought. Lots of out-of-town friends. Also looking at what my husband brought back in:).

Weird changes at work. Cleared my classroom and will be ending up with 54 students. Now I have to clear some of them out.

I love the concept! I look forward to sharing my story of shedding an unhappy marriage, boxes & boxes of stuff and over 100lbs with everyone…

After 25 years in a city with 100,000 people, my husband and I are moving to the lake 40 miles away in the country. It is a beautiful lake and we are slowly getting involved in the community. How do I combine two homes along with 2 storage units? We have 4 wonderful children who are all grown and busy with their families. We still have some of their “stuff” and we have a plan for a couple road trips to make a delivery.
What to actually keep is the big question. I just helped my 91 year old Mother move into a one bedroom apartment after she and my father celebrated 69 years of marriage living in a 3 bedroom home. I am inspired to do some “shedding” before I turn 91!
I look forward to this 8 week adventure and I thank you Bindu for this opportunity!!!

After helping both my mom and my mother-in-law shed some of their things they were not using I realized I have plenty I can shed! What a wonderful idea! I am excited about the space awaiting.

sas September 8, 2010 at 4:46 am

Woo hoo! Go Shedventurers! This is going to be awesome :)

Lisa@practicallyintuitive September 8, 2010 at 1:39 pm

The very fact that just reading this post caused an enormous amount of fear in me tells me that I need to participate. I think I’m in.

No wait. I KNOW I’m in. :)

(runs and hides in closet but can’t fit in there because all the stuff is blocking the way. Dammit. Now I’m stuck!)

Cheryl Chavarria September 8, 2010 at 9:13 pm

There is some serious greatness coming with this project and what a movement you are creating Bindu! I would love to see a series of photos of how things are slowly but surely shrinking around you to create space for what you’re yearning for in life. Since I’m always simplifying, I’m still deciding on what I will focus on shedding. Ha! Just came to me- distractions! That’s it.

Kelly September 9, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Completely in – this is just what I need to be doing right now!

Sara January 5, 2011 at 10:59 am

dang, i think we already collectively shed september….

should you decide to not let go of this great idea and help the shedless among us get cracking, please alert me.

which i’ll do myself by not letting go of this link to your (newly discovered & truly excellent) blog.

with much heart,
SARA
